The Spice o' Life.
That quintessential 70's pattern in shades of Burnt Orange, Avocado Green, Harvest Gold and Brown. It's almost as synonymous with Corningware as the Blue Cornflower is. It's taken me awhile to get photographs of all these pieces, and there still may be some missing, but I think I got it pretty well covered. (please excuse the myriad of lighting issues that I could not fix... Remember, these are all in thrift stores and taken with the camera on my phone)
The Spice o' Life pattern (1972-1988) was produced in two different ways.....

The Coffee Pot (the tea kettle neck was lengthened slightly so a plastic cone could be used for "pour over drip")
Please note, that almost every single piece above has a slight variation to the actual pattern. The majority feature 2 tomatoes in the center of the design (Brown and Red), while other feature a Tomato & an Artichoke, or a Tomato & a Bell Pepper or an Artichoke & a Bell Pepper or, in one case, just an artichoke. It is unclear at this time how many variations of this pattern were made, and on which pieces said variations were available on. For more information on this pattern, please visit "Corelle Corner"
Be that as it may, this pattern was SO popular that the line of "coordinates" was produced with French words on them....

There was a Mustard (Moutardier) bottle as well as a Ketchup bottle, though the ketchup bottle said "Sauce de Tomate" which is tomato sauce, not ketchup. The French word for ketchup is, well, "Ketchup". Evidently, that was disappointingly "not French" enough for the designers, so Tomato Sauce it is.... LOL
I have not found either of these pieces in a thrift store yet.
Update (5/27/2013): Correction... I just found a Mustard pump bottle at the Salvation Army on 122nd.
Still looking for the elusive Sauce of Tomato, though....

i have the set of ketchup and mustard i picked from a friends attic the only difference is they have silver colored top halves instead of red and yellow

ReplyDeleteI have one of the Doubles (parsley and sage) but the tomato is a brown color. Is this discolor due to age?
